King University Bachelor of Social Work Program Accreditation Reaffirmed

BRISTOL, Tenn., April 25, 2016 – King University has recently received reaffirmation of accreditation for the University’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The program, with 40 consecutive years of continuous accreditation, is fully accredited through 2024.

“We are so pleased to have received reaffirmation of accreditation for the Bachelor of Social Work degree at King,” says Jodi Helbert, program coordinator and assistant professor of the Bachelor of Social Work at King. “There is a huge disparity in the number of social work programs available throughout this region. Without this program, students may not be able to receive their BSW degree but also the surrounding communities would suffer from not having access to competent and qualified social workers.”

August 2016, King will begin offering the Bachelor of Social Work program through the University’s Graduate, Professional, and Online Studies Programs (GPS) at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Va.

“In alignment with King’s mission statement, to build meaningful lives of achievement and cultural transformation in Christ, we’re blessed everything has fallen into place for us to offer this program to both our traditional student body on King’s main campus in Bristol, Tennessee, and to our adult studies students as a full degree program in Abingdon, Virginia, at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center,” says Helbert.

“We are very excited about the reaffirmation of the BSW program by the Council on Social Work Education,” says Charlotte Hoover, Ed.D., assistant professor and field director of Bachelor of Social Work at King. “This program is a great asset to the local communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.”

“The BSW program originated at Virginia Intermont College (VI), and at the time of VI’s closing in 2014, the program was in the midst of the re-accreditation cycle,” says Helbert. “We were granted an extension [by the Council on Social Work Education and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)] and permitted to commute the balance of the VI accreditation and continue with the reaffirmation process until the leadership of King University. This was an unprecedented move by the council.”

Beginning with the spring 2015 semester, King University received students from the recently closed Virginia Intermont through an approved teach-out agreement. This agreement allowed VI students to complete their Bachelor of Social Work degree program at King University with full accreditation from the CSWE.

The following semester, in fall 2015, King began its own Bachelor of Social Work program with approval through SACSCOC and CSWE. The program prepares students for entry-level, generalist professional social work practice or admission into a Master of Social Work program.
