King University News :: King's SIFE Ties for First at Regional Competition in Charlotte

King College's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization recently tied for first place in their league out of approximately 30 colleges during a recently held SIFE USA Regional Competition in Charlotte, N.C.

Participating SIFE Teams presented reviews of their service and business projects for the 2010-11 academic year to a panel of 12 judges. SIFE Teams were judged on both the quality of their projects and the quality of their presentations.

King's SIFE Team members who were a part of the first place team in the regional competition included Katie Greatti, Tommy Ricker, Jessica Trent, Manuel Davila, Juan Avila, and Jacob Canter.

The number of projects King's SIFE organization participated in this year was significant. They include:

  • Presenting personal finance tips to lower income families at the BRHA sponsored Celebrate Your Family event.
  • Promoted and participated in the Alzheimer's Walk to raise money for Alzheimer's.
  • Partnered with Rotary Club to help clean-up Booher Road.
  • Collaborated with Rotary Club for a mission trip to Haiti. The team devoted time at two orphanages. Students helped wire one orphanage for electricity and provided a sun oven that can be used to make food for consumption and hopefully as a business.
  • Assisted the Young Bankers Association with a Food Drive at King College.
  • Partnered with the Bristol Chamber of Commerce in presented business ethics cases to 50 high school students as part of Bristol Youth Leadership.
  • Helped with logistics and errands for the ‘Will This Float? Where business ideas sink or swim event.
  • Sponsored coffee and entertainment at Java J's to collect cans for Campbell's Let's Can Hunger Food Drive.
  • Awarded a grant by Sam's Club for the Sam's Club Environmental Sustainability Challenge. Two local downtown businesses, One of a Kind Gallery and Goodman's Jewelry, were identified for assistance with economic and environmental improvements. SIFE installed new lighting, a more efficient refrigerator, and additional efficient water fixtures. SIFE also developed a plan to Flip more downtown Bristol businesses in future years.
  • The SIFE Team also just completed development of a KC Marketplace on Face Book for King students to buy and sell textbooks

King's SIFE Team will be advancing to the SIFE USA National Competition to be held in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 10-12.
