King University News :: King’s Academic Center for Excellence Adds New Smarthinking Service

Locating assistance for that challenging class just got easier.  King University’s Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) has added a new service to its already stellar lineup.  Beginning this semester, students will now have access to online tutoring through the new Smarthinking service.

The Academic Center for Excellence, located on the first floor of Bristol Hall on King’s Bristol campus, provides academic support services to the King University community through the Writing Center, Speaking Center, and Math Center.  The Writing Center also includes an Online Writing Lab (OWL).

The new online tutoring service is provided by Smarthinking, Inc., the leader in on-demand, live online tutoring and academic support.  In 2012, the company announced the completion of its four-millionth academic support session.  The program serves as a complimentary service to the ACE.  Students are provided five hours each semester they may use for tutoring services through Smarthinking.

Smarthinking, available to students 24/7, provides qualified tutors combined with technology to help offer outstanding online academic support to students.  With Smarthinking, students identify problems with which they would like assistance.  The online tutor then works to assist them through the learning process.  In addition to writing and math, students will have access to tutoring for subjects to include reading, science, business, English for speakers of other languages, Spanish, nursing and allied health, and computers and technology.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this new service for King students,” said Kim Holloway, associate professor of English, writing program administrator, and director of the ACE and the Writing Center at King.  “Students will not be limited to usage of one service or the other.  They can utilize the assistance of peer tutors in the ACE as well as online tutors through Smarthinking, all for the same paper.  Smarthinking will be particularly useful for both online and distance learners.

ACE serves as a clearing house for all tutoring on campus for departments.  ACE peer tutors are selected as a result of faculty recommendations.  For subjects not covered by the ACE such as History, Physics, or Biology, faculty provide the ACE with a list of tutors for their respective departments.  The ACE will send students to the tutor for the department in which they need assistance.

The ACE is open, and tutors are available, Monday through Thursday; hours change from semester to semester.  Assistance is also available by appointment.  For more information on ACE or Smarthinking, please contact
