King College is hosting a pre-game dinner/kick-off event for the newly established
Tornado Athletic Club on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. at King's Student Center
Complex. The public is invited to join in the celebration and enjoy an opportunity
to meet King coaches, student-athletes, and hear more about the successes of the Tornado
Athletic program. The event precedes the women's and men's basketball teams as they
take on Barton College.
The mission of the Tornado Athletic Club (TAC) is to secure annual support and build
a stable network of donors who desire to enhance and enable the competitive spirit
of student-athletes through financial contributions and participation, said Denise
Asbury, director of annual giving for King's Office of Development.
King student-athletes are prime examples of the ideal student-athlete; they excel
in the classroom, on the playing field, and graduate with a passion for becoming transformational
leaders in the community, said David Hicks, athletic director for King. An engaged
Tornado Club actively supporting these student athletes and their endeavors is crucial
to our mission at King.
Gifted athletically and academically, King athletes give 100% in competition and in
the classroom, said Hicks. Contributions to the TAC allow these gifted individuals
to focus on their next competition, secure in the knowledge their School and their
community are behind them.
The TAC is a joint effort between Tornado Athletics and King's Development Office.
We are organizing an opportunity for interested parties to support athletics in general,
like a booster type program, said Asbury. Budgets for small colleges and most athletic
programs are usually limited. We rely on support from alumni, friends of the College,
and parents to help us. The most noteworthy function of the TAC will be to provide
extra resources for needs of the athletic program.
Donations help provide necessary resources. The cost of travel is an ever changing,
often increasing expense, as are the costs associated with meals, equipment, maintenance
of athletic fields, and indoor facilities. Donors will have the ability to designate
their contributions toward a specific sport. Unrestricted gifts will go to the athletics
areas that have the greatest need.
The Jan. 21 kick-off event will include a meal at King's Student Center Complex along
with a short program featuring speakers such as Athletic Director David Hicks, Men's
Basketball Head Coach George Pitts, Chief Development Officer John King as well as
a few of King's student-athletes. There will also be several door prizes, and an appearance
by King's new mascot, Twister.
We are excited to provide some additional support for our athletic program, said Asbury.
Approximately 48 percent of King's traditional undergraduate students participate
in one or more athletic programs.
A NCAA Division II program and the newest member of the Conference Carolinas, King
College athletes compete in the following areas: Men's Baseball, Women's Softball,
Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Swimming Diving, Men's and Women's
Tennis, Men's and Women's Cross Country, Men's and Women's Track Field, Men's and
Women's Cycling, Men's and Women's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and
Women's Wrestling, Cheerleading, and Dance.
