King University News :: King College alumni and friends invited to attend Dogwood Weekend

Alumni and friends of King College are invited to join in the upcoming 85th celebration of Dogwood Weekend on April 15-17, 2011.  The annual celebration, Celebrating Past and Future offers classmates and friends opportunities to gather, reminisce, and reconnect.

Events for the weekend include such favorites as the Jay Baumgardner Memorial Golf Classic, Alumni Luncheon, picnic on the Oval, alumni soccer and volleyball games, production from King's Performing Visual Arts (PVA) Department, and more.

The Jay Baumgardner Memorial Golf Classic will take place on Friday, April 15 at The Club (Country Club of Bristol).  Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and an awards reception at 3 p.m.  Each player will receive giveaways and a boxed lunch.  In addition to the tournament, there will be a putting contest with prizes to include the chance to win round trip tickets in the domestic U.S. provided by AirTran Airways.

This year the PVA Department will present the Broadway classic, Pippin, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.  The production opens at the Paramount Center for the Arts in downtown Bristol on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. and runs Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 15 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m.

Pippin speaks volumes to young adults today, said Elizabeth Dollar, associate professor of theatre.  He is looking for his calling, where he fits in.  He wants to be extraordinary, but his is unsatisfied with all that he tries.

Dogwood Weekend is something the campus looks forward to each year, said Finley Green, director of alumni and annual giving for King.  We have wonderful, diverse and accomplished alumni, and welcoming many of them home to share in this weekend is a wonderful experience.
