Convocation Speakers and Their Published Works - A Listing

Is there a particular Convocation speaker who peaks your interest in his or her area of expertise? Does he or she move you to want to learn more? Below is a brief biographical sketch of  each Convocation speaker with a link to a list in PDF of published works for further reading. Fall 2007 Convocations

OPENING CONVOCATION
August 27th: Dr. Gilbert Meilaender

Dr. Meilaender is the Phyllis and Richard Dusenberg Chair in Christian Ethics and Professor of Theology at Valparaiso University.  He has written extensively about stem-cell research and cloning and is a member of the President’s Council on Bioethics since its beginning in 2002. His works include Bioethics: A Primer for Christians (W.B. Eerdmans, 2005) and Things that Count: Essays Moral and Theological (ISI Books, 2000).

Spring 2007 Convocations

March 26th - 27th:  Mr. Wendell Berry

Mr. Wendell Berry is the author of more than forty books of essays, poetry, and novels. He has worked a farm in Henry County, Kentucky since 1965. He is a former professor of English at the University of Kentucky and a past fellow of both the Guggenheim Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his work, including an award from the National Institute and Academy of Arts and Letters in 1971, and most recently, the T.S. Elliot Award.

January 29th : Dr. Randall Balmer

Dr. Randall Balmer, the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of American Religion at Barnard College, Columbia University, earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985. His extensive publications include a memoir, Growing Pains: Learning to Love My Father's Faith (Brazos Press, 2001) which was named Book of the Year in spirituality by Christianity Today. A frequent media commentator on religion and American public life, Dr. Balmer has made numerous appearances on television and radio, and has contributed written commentaries to many newspapers and magazines.

Fall 2006 Convocations:

November 20th : Dr. Owen Gingrich

Dr. Owen Gingrich is a Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and of the History of Science at Harvard University. He is also a senior astronomer emeritus at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. He is a leading authority on Johannes Kepler and Nicholas Copernicus.

October 23rd: Dr. Neil McDonald

Dr. Neil McDonald is from Glasgow, Scotland and is spending October 3rd through the 29th at King College as a visiting scholar. He and Martin Dotterweich were graduate students together at the University of Edinburgh. Neil currently resides near London and teaches theology at Roehampton University. His latest work, "Metaphysics and the God of Israel: Systematic Theology of the Old and New Testaments", is forthcoming January 2007.

September 6th: Dr. Tony Campolo

Tony Campolo, professor emeritus at Eastern University, is the founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in various third world countries and in cities across North America. He is the author of many books, his most recent being, "Speaking My Mind."

September 11th: Dr. Holmes Rolston

Dr. Holmes Rolston is the University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Colorado State University. He was written six books and numerous articles and book chapters. Rolston has been an invited speaker on all seven continents. In 2003 he was awarded the Templeton Prize in religion.

OPENING CONVOCATION
August 28th: Dr. Iain Torrance

Dr. Iain Torrance was born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1949.  He has earned an M.A. in mental philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, B.D. in New Testament languages and literatures from St. Andrews University, and a D.Phil in Syriac patrisitcs from Oxford University.  Dr. Torrance was named the sixth president of Princeton Theological Seminary in April 2004.  His scholarly work focuses on early Christian thought, the ethics of war, and bioethics.  He is also co-editor of the Scottish Journal of Theology.
