Academic Advising
You won’t be alone as you navigate the ins-and-outs of your major and graduation requirements. Your academic advisor is available to help you determine your academic and career goals and then help you customize a plan to reach your goals and graduation requirements. You’ll be assigned an advisor based on your preliminary interest in a particular major. If you are unsure of your major, an advisor will also help you explore different areas of study, while you are fulfilling the core requirements. You’ll find out who your faculty advisor is in plenty of time to plan for your courses in the fall.
The faculty advisor is considered to be the “expert” in the chosen course of study. The advisor will help you:
- Fully understand your major’s requirements
- Select your courses to meet graduation requirements
- Customize your courses to meet your career goals
- Discuss career possibilities within chosen academic field
- Find internship opportunities and develop a professional network
- Apply for graduate and professional schools
- Guide you through the career seeking process
- Land your first job!
Your faculty advisor becomes your mentor as you develop a personal, working relationship with your advisor. Should you decide your major isn’t for you, your advisor will help you transition to a new advisor.
If you find yourself having trouble in your classes, your advisor can help you arrange tutorial services, specialized academic advising, consultation, and appropriate counsel and referral. You may also consider visiting the
Learning Resource Center for additional help.
