Overview
The King College program in French offers a major in French language and literature as well as a minor in French. The program seeks to nurture all of the major language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension. Through study of the language and literature of other cultures, one gains a heightened sensitivity to the use of one’s native language and a greater appreciation for the world’s diversity. Why Study French?
- French is the first or second language in more than 40 countries and is spoken on five continents.
- More than 1,200 French companies have subsidiaries in the United States. France is the largest recipient of U.S. foreign investment. France is a world leader in technology and medical research.
- After English, French is the second most widely used language at the United Nations. Study of French can improve English language skills, as more than 40% of English vocabulary has roots in French.

Study Abroad
French majors and minors are highly encouraged to study abroad, both for the irreplaceable linguistic practice such a program provides and for the enlightening experience of encountering a culture first-hand.

Students can earn up to 9 credits at various levels during the six-week program. The program typically includes excursions to various sights of interest in northern France as well as several days in Paris.
The college also endorses study abroad programs conducted by the Beaver College Center for Education Abroad and EF Language Schools. Available programs range in duration from two weeks to an academic year.
For more information on these or other study abroad opportunities, visit the department of the King College Center for Study Abroad.
