Peeke School of Christian Mission

Health, Agriculture, Culture, and Community

October 13 - 17, 2008
will be held at ECHO, 17391 Durrance Rd., N. Fort Myers, FL 33917)

Community health means empowering people and communities to take the initiative to improve their own health and living conditions. This requires knowledge about the people - their beliefs, culture, and ways of communication so that we can transmit new ideas to them in appropriate ways. This includes concepts of adequate food and good  nutrition that are essential for health. Yet people cannot have adequate food without effective agricultural methods. Because of this, the Global Health Training Program at King College has joined with ECHO in N. Ft. Myers Florida to offer a five-day workshop on community health and agriculture.

Subjects that will be covered are:

  • The rationale, principles, and practice of community health as the empowerment of people
  • How to evaluate the beliefs and practices of people of another culture
  • How to communicate scientific ideas to people of non-scientific cultures
  • Methods of adult non-formal education
  • An overview of primary health care and its major interventions
  • How to grow nutritious legumes and trees
  • Approved for 25 hours of category 1 CME Credit

HIV/AIDS, Nutrition and Agrictulture

December 1 - 5, 2008
(Will be held at ECHO, 17391 Durrance Rd., N. Fort Myers, FL 33917.)

A serious problem of persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is that of adequate nutrition. Poor nutrition aggravates HIV infection and makes the anti-retro-viral treatment of the infection more difficult.

This workshop will focus on the nutritional needs of PLWHAs, appropriate foods for them in various contexts, and simple methods of agriculture to grow the appropriate foods. The workshop is for persons involved in community development, agriculture, and health who are engaged in combating the HIV epidemic worldwide.

For further information about this workshop and registration, visit the ECHO website at www.echonet.org or contact Stan Doerr at sdoerr@echonet.org or at (239) 543-3246.
