Driver’s License
Non-immigrant classes of visa holders are not allowed to obtain photo an ID driver’s license in Tennessee. They may, however, apply for a certificate for driving (CFD) which will allow them to drive on the highways and obtain insurance. For complete information on applying for a CFD see Chap 2 (http://tennessee.gov/safety/dlhandbook/05chap2.pdf) of the Tennessee Driver Handbook. Generally, you will need to present the following application, your passport, I-20, and two proofs of Tennessee residency (bank statement, bills) to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They will give you a written test and schedule a driving test for you.

Taxes
The IRS classifies all non-immigrants as non-residential aliens. It is recommended that you file a tax return, even if you did not work or bring in any income. Although you may not be required to file it could work to your advantage in the future. The forms that international students should file are the 1040-NR-EZ for the simplest cases or 1040-NR.
