Chapel and Convocation

Traditional undergraduate students participate in Chapel and Convocation series as a part of their service requirements necessary to fulfill degree requirements.

Convocation

Weekly convocations feature speakers from a variety of backgrounds to facilitate critical thinking about western and nonwestern cultures to help you examine and understand your own belief systems as opposed to those hostile or indifferent to the Christian worldview and to prepare you to engage the world through a vital understanding of the Christian faith.

Spring 2008 Convocation Series: Whistling in the Dark

Faith is a kind of whistling in the dark, an attempt to keep the spirits up while peering through the shadows for some glimmer of meaning,” according to Frederick Buechner, one of King College’s guests for “Whistling in the Dark,” our spring convocation series. Join us for a rare opportunity to hear from a number of artists and scholars who are pushing toward notions of meaning through their writing, teaching, music, and scholarship.

Guest speakers include William Turner, who will help us celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday while uncovering the African American experience in Appalachia. Frederick Buechner will be on campus to inaugurate the Buechner Institute. This all-day event will also feature friends and interpreters such as Thomas Lynch, Walter Brueggemann, and Michael Card. Later in the season, the Charles Goodwin Trio will provide an evening of music, and Tim Mooney will lead us through the life and time of Molière, France’s favorite playwright. Best-selling novelist Clyde Edgerton will also join us to share his stories and music. Essayist Marion Winik, bioethicist Rebecca Pentz, and Holocaust survivor Martin Weiss will also join us to share their insights, talents, and experiences.

Chapel

The Chapel experience provides you, along with faculty and staff members, a time for spiritual reflection and community worship. Chapel speakers broaden thinking, encourage contemplation, and foster a spiritual connection with God.

Special Sunday Services

Worship services are held on a few Sundays in conjunction with special campus activities, such as Orientation Weekend, Family Weekend, and Dogwood Weekend. Students often participate in planning and leading these special services.
