A Musical Heritage

After coal and timber, music is Appalachia’s chief export. The strains of old-time, bluegrass and country music were first heard here, and over the past century Appalachia’s music has been a central influence on our national culture, economy, and identity. Extension participants will have prime opportunities to experience the roots of Appalachian music, including visits to the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Va., and the Birthplace of Country Music in Bristol, Va./Tenn. Studies will focus on the historic meeting of the banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin; religious and cultural themes in Appalachian music; and the resulting impact on popular culture. Participants are invited to bring their own instruments, and share in a jam and talkbacks with regional old-time musicians.
