Biology
"My preparation for Physical Therapy school far exceeded academic training
alone. The atmosphere at King, both in and out of the classroom, builds a
foundation based on character."
--Will McVey, MPT
Class of '92
Overview
The Biology Department offers B.S. degrees along three tracks: 1) General Biology, 2) Cell and Molecular Biology, and 3) Pharmacy 3+1. The department also offers a B.A. degree as either a stand-alone or a B.A. with licensure for those who wish to pursue a career in secondary education.
Graduates of the General and Cell and Molecular tracks are prepared for entry into most health professions schools and into many different types of graduate programs. Also, there are numerous entry level jobs available for students with a B.S. in biology who do not wish to pursue further training. The B.A. degree offers more flexibility in the course load for students interested in fields such as science journalism, pharmaceutical sales, or secondary education. The B.A. with licensure requires a minor in secondary education and prepares one to teach high school biology. Students completing the Pharmacy 3+1 track are awarded a B.S. in biology after completing three years of study at King and one year at an accredited school of pharmacy.
A wide range of opportunities are available for students who wish to study biology at King College. Our students are encouraged to select internships and to participate in summer research programs to further assess their skills and interests.

Career Opportunities
A major in biology prepares one for a variety of careers. Most students
planning a career in one of the health sciences choose a major in biology. If
they do not major in biology, they are typically required to take several
biology courses. The major also prepares one for graduate education in numerous
areas of the life sciences. In conjunction with the Education Department, a
major exists which prepares one for secondary education. There are jobs
available for those who do not wish to pursue an additional degree. In the past
such students have taken jobs in pharmaceutical sales, in laboratories, and in
hospitals. In addition, jobs in the biotechnology industry are currently popular
for many graduates with a degree in biology.
