Lorrie McGovern
Dr. Lorrie McGovern understands the needs and challenges facing adult learners because she was one, not too long ago.
She took college courses immediately after graduating high school, but her career opportunities took her to several states. As many adult learners do, she struggled with losing credits and having to take extra courses.
“It was difficult to complete my bachelor’s degree as I moved around to different states, but I learned that I can persevere and achieve my goals. It was a challenge, but I was determined to finish.”
This spirit of determination is one of the common threads connecting most adult learners.
“They are dedicated students who desire to learn and gain new knowledge,” she said. “Also, most have work experiences that enhance the information from the textbook.”
Dr. McGovern also brings extensive ‘real-world’ experience to the classroom. She has served as a computer programmer and analyst for such companies as American Express, Lowe’s and Sun Oil. She has also worked at her family’s car dealership and as the Director of Community Development for the Bristol Chamber of Commerce.
Because she and her students have extensive work experiences, she encourages classroom discussions.
“I try to involve the students as we discuss different topics and invite them to enhance the lecture by sharing their experiences. These students enjoy participating in class and learning from each other.”
They also have unique challenges such as balancing work, family, church and community responsibilities with the course work requirements. Because she remembers how overwhelming these commitments can be, Dr. McGovern motivates her students by keeping them focused on graduation.
“The best motivation in the accelerated adult program is the fact that the credits accumulate quickly. Students can easily see how the coursework is being completed and the graduation date arrives quickly.”
